Interested in becoming a KMP mentee?

KMP Mentee is a skilled newcomer who is looking for support and guidance from industry professionals to help them build their professional networks, increase their knowledge of recruitment practices and get a better understanding of their profession locally to gain employment in their area of expertise.

KMP has been helping skilled newcomer professionals improve their employment potential by matching them with mentors from their industry or occupation. This short video highlights some of the key statistics about mentees who have joined the program.

Why should I become a mentee?

The Kaleidoscope Mentoring Program (KMP) helps newcomers (migrants and refugees) professionals reconnect with their careers by connecting them with a mentor from their own profession/industry in Australia to guide and mentor them.  Having the guidance, encouragement and support of a trusted and experienced mentor can provide a mentee with a broad range of personal and professional benefits.

For mentees, some key benefits of mentoring include:

  • Exposure to new ideas and ways of thinking
  • Advice on developing strengths and overcoming weaknesses
  • Guidance on professional development and advancement
  • Increased visibility and recognition within the professional network
  • The opportunity to develop new skills and knowledge.

All mentees will also have access to our Mentoring Coach to provide additional support if required.

Please note: The mentor’s role is NOT to find a job for the mentee.

What do I require to become a KMP mentee?

Mentee eligibility

  • have a minimum post-secondary education equivalent to a  degree
  • have international work experience in their profession
  • are ‘job-ready’ – this means you are ready to start a job in their field, in Australia, at any given time
  • have limited (< 1 year) or no Australian work experience in your profession/industry
  • are currently unemployed or underemployed (i.e. not working in your field of expertise)
  • have full work rights with no time restrictions in Australia. In this cycle, we also have a limited number of mentee positions available to skilled migrants on Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) Post- Study Work stream that have at least 1 year left on their visa
  • have lived in Australia for five years or less. In this cycle we also have a limited number of positions available for migrants who have been here from five to ten years
  • have the Competent English language proficiency to perform effectively in the workplace in your field. (For details on the requirements through alternative test results, please see Department of Home Affairs)
  • have obtained a National Police Clearance within the past six months.  Mentees will be able to use their NPC with their job applications or recruitment processes.  (Applications for NPC can be made online or in-person at participating Australia Post outlets.  Applicants must provide suitable proof of identity-based on a 100-point identity check.)

Mentee suitability

As a newcomer professional, you will need to:

  • be actively seeking work in your professional field
  • have the current core and allied skills required to work in your professional field
  • commit to working with a mentor for a minimum of 18 hours over three months
  • commit to 52 hours of engagement with the various program learning activities.

Mentee readiness

To show your employment readiness, you will need to show that you have:

  • job search skills: an Australian-standard updated resume, knowledge of interview skills and basic networking skills.  (You can attend our job-readiness sessions for these.)
  • appropriate supports: e.g. transportation, childcare or other supports required to start a suitable employment
  • appropriate attitude: openness to receive constructive advice and willingness to try new approaches to job searching.

Mentee fee payment

An non-refundable administrative fee of $100+GST will apply to all successful applicants. Once you have been successfully matched you will receive an invoice for payment. The invoice must be paid by the due date. KMP may cancel your booking for the mentoring program if the invoice is not paid.
